R32 (Difluoromethane) is a next-generation HFC used in modern, high-efficiency air conditioning systems and heat pumps. It is the primary component of R410A but is now being used in its pure form because it offers better cooling capacity and a much lower Global Warming Potential (GWP).

R32 is classified by ASHRAE as an A2L (Mildly Flammable) refrigerant.

What this means: It is much harder to ignite than propane (A3), but it does require specific safety precautions.
Safety First: Only use manifold gauges, vacuum pumps, and recovery machines that are specifically rated for A2L/R32 use to avoid spark risks.

Absolutely not. While R32 makes up 50% of the R410A blend, an R410A system is not designed for the flammability or the specific pressure characteristics of pure R32. Mixing them is dangerous, illegal under EPA regulations, and will likely destroy your compressor.

Under the EPA’s AIM Act, the US is phasing down high-GWP refrigerants. R32 has a GWP of 675, which is roughly one-third that of R410A (2,088). Additionally, R32 is more energy-efficient, meaning systems use less electricity and a smaller refrigerant charge to achieve the same cooling.
